Pet PassportsPet passports are necessary for travel between EU countries without requiring a 6 month quarantine on arrival. They allow control of various infectious diseases that have been eliminated or are currently being eliminated from various countries, most notably rabies. Several steps must be followed before free movement between the involved countries is allowed - First your pet must be microchipped for identification. Next a rabies vaccination is given. After 21 days your pet can leave the UK however more steps must be completed in order to re-enter the UK without quarantine. A blood test needs to be taken to check the response to the vaccine, if this comes back positive your pet can re-enter the UK from 6 months after the date the blood sample was taken. At this stage a full passport is complete and all you need to do is ensure you keep up to date with the booster vaccinations for rabies, if they expire the blood sampling procedure will need to be repeated. Before re-entering the UK you will also need to have a vet treat your pet for ticks and tapeworms. Some countries may have extra rules and you must check before travelling that you fully comply with any requirements. More information is avaliable here. You must also ensure that you travel on approved routes. Summary -Microchip |
