On the day of surgery and in-patient careSeparate wardsOur dogs and cats are kept in separate wards to ensure that they are stressed as little as possible. The wards are kept at a constant temperature and are ventilated to make them as comfortable as possible. A range of cage sizes ensures all are catered for. We also have completely seperate isolation wards for high-risk patients or patients with infectious diseases. Physical examinationAll surgical patients receive a full clinical examination prior to surgery. This allows us to make sure they are fit enough to undergo an anaesthetic. We check their heart and lungs, look for behavioural changes and check for any signs of infection. Blood testsAlthough not obligatory, we recommend blood tests prior to anaesthetics, especially in animals over 7 years of age. A full clinical examination will find many problems, but some are only found with blood tests, for example, early kidney problems. We frequently run blood tests as part of our investigations in ill animals.
Our state of the art laboratory running 'wet biochemistry', the industry standard allows us to get results within 15 minutes of sampling your pet. It also allows us to run a greater number of tests 'in house' rather than sending samples away to labs. We also have modern haematology and electrolyte analyzers. Modern anaestheticsWe use modern safe drugs, equivalent to those used in human hospitals, that all our vets and nurses are used to. An intravenous catheter is placed to allow drugs to be given easily and maintaining access to the vein in case of emergency. Pain reliefPain is something we all suffer from and animals are no different. The best way to deal with post-operative pain is to treat it before it happens. This is a scientific fact. Therefore we give all our surgical patients pain relief before we start surgery. We will also send the majority home on pain relief. This ensures a more comfortable pet, a quicker recovery and a happier owner. Anaesthetic monitoringThe best way to deal with anaesthetic emergencies is to catch them before they become a problem. We have a trained nurse watching our patients at all times through surgery and our computer based monitor measures heart rate, breathing rate, ECG and the amount of Oxygen in the blood. The combination of our excellent nurses and monitor makes the anaesthetic as safe as possible.
Our purpose built modern operating theatre with piped anaesthetic gases and an active pump for waste gases. This dog is connected to a monitor allowing constant evaluation of its health. Back to main page... |
