Types of surgery

Surgery is something all pets will usually undergo at least once in their lifetime, although some lucky ones may never get the chance to visit our surgical suite. For those that do, it often brings a stressful and worrying time for both your pet and yourself. On this page, we hope to de-mystify surgery a little, educate you on how surgery can be made safer and more comfortable, and show you how we do things in the Arg Beiyn Veterinary Practice. We want any surgical procedure to cause as little distress as possible to both pet and owner. Although surgery may be done for many reasons, we can roughly categorise it into three types:

Elective surgery

This is where you, the owner, make a conscious decision for your pet to have surgery. The most common surgical procedure that comes under this heading is neutering. There are many positive reasons for neutering, which our staff will be happy to discuss with you. With Elective surgery, we can make sure that your pet and you are as prepared as possible. We can pick a day which is suitable for everybody, we can inform you in advance about the procedure, what it involves, and the aftercare needed. We can also ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible prior to receiving an anaesthetic.

Sometimes the vet may find a problem with your pet that may require surgery to either provide a diagnosis or improve quality of life. This surgery is not categorised as an emergency. We will still strive to make the whole procedure as easy as possible for you, following the same guidelines as above.

Emergency surgery

Unfortunately there are times your pet requires surgery urgently. There can be many reasons for this, ranging from broken limbs to a womb infection. In these cases, urgency does not allow for many of the preparations mentioned above. However, both your pet and you are important to us and we will try to keep stress to a minimum. Where possible the vet will try to explain everything to you before surgery. We will strive to ensure that the pet is as fit as possible to receive an anaesthetic, often taking time to stabilise them first.

Advanced surgery

Some procedures require advanced training above normal veterinary surgery. In our practice Karl Bovenizer and Edric Cross have extra certificate qualifications in Cardiology and Small Animal Surgery respectively, so between them they can perform many advanced procedures without the need to refer them to institutions off the Island.
